Synopsis
Three terrifying tales of the living dead spanning three centuries are collected in this independent horror anthology. The first tale, set in feudal Japan, concerns a samurai and a monk who uncover the secret of resurrecting the dead, only to be faced with an army of marauding corpses. The second story takes place in 1948, as a hard-boiled detective takes on what seems to be a routine missing persons case, only to stumble upon an underground strip club, jaded millionaires, and brilliant but discredited scientist experimenting with raising the dead. And finally, in a blasted future after World War III, gangs of vampires and werewolves engage in bloody turf battles while the surviving military rulers use members of both clubs in special wrestling matches staged for their amusement. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Not even a good "bad" movie by juliemiller1 April 17, 2005 - 4:30 PM PDT

I agree with the other reviews. About the only good thing I can say is that some of the sets and costumes were interesting. The plot was forced, and the actors overacted their way through three transitionless short films.

This movie sucks - unless of course you enjoy sitting through 90 minutes of z-level film school project nonsense. There is NOTHING terrifying about this crap - my friends and I laughed more than anything. The effects are LAME, the storylines SIMPLISTIC, and the acting is ATROCIOUS. Although we did give a bit of credit to the writer for trying to pull together 3 disparate tales with a silly literary device. If you LOVE really BAD horror flicks that do not elicit any kind of fright, then this movie is for YOU. Otherwise, don't waste your time.

How to describe EXHUMED? Although there is a mention of Sub Rosa studio in "thank you" credits, this tri-part "scare" movie is nowhere near as bad as "Peter Rottentail" or "Among Us." But it is not exactly what you might term "good," either.

Experiencing this one is more akin to watching a new moviemaker learning his craft (in the very early stages, at that). You can see that he (director/writer Brian Clement) has some talent for both the occasional witty line, interesting situation and the ability to put things together (sometimes). He steals from film noir, horror and other genres--sometimes well, often not. He also wants to cobble together three stories that are set in different eras and places but are linked nonetheless, and he almost achieves this.

What he finally manages is at least somewhat interesting and keeps you watching (sometimes with much difficulty), but much of this is so amateur--and obviously done on a very low budget--that you are alternately pleased and disappointed by what he comes up with. I'd recommend the film to people who love movies enough to stick with those examples that fail interestingly--or who want to see the early work of someone who MIGHT go on to better things. We'll see....
