| AROUND THE BEND is memorable mainly for its performances: Michael Caine (seen too briefly), Josh Lucas (warm and hugely appealing) and Christopher Walken (acting his most "normal" since maybe his pre-"Deer Hunter" days) plus lovely supporting turns from Glenne Headly, Gerry Bamman and a great kid named Jonah Bobo. As director, Jordan Roberts brings a good eye for capturing actors' moments and terrific scenic visuals; as the writer, however, he falls short. There's enough eccentricity here to fill ten films, and all the fine acting on view can't conceal the unbelievable nature of the story/script. You may, as I did, stick with it and find yourself moved--while knowing full well how silly it all is. |
