Filmmakers Chris Smith and Sarah Price (the production team behind American Movie) direct the bizarre documentary The Yes Men. The film follows Andy and Mike, two regular guys who pretended to be corporate bigwigs in order to expose powerful corporate evil doing and have a bit of fun in the process. In 1999, they created a parody of the World Trade Organization website that mocked the harshest ideas about globalization. However humorous its intent, the website earned them invitations to important business trade meetings around the world. Companies and organizations actually thought they were the real WTO. Andy and Mike played along, impersonating despicable executives in order to publicly humiliate them. The guys refer to their pranks as "identity correction." The Yes Men premiered at the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival and was shown as part of a special screening at the2004 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

This is a great treat, and not only for those who are familiar with the issues behind the protests against the WTO but also--perhaps especially--for those who are not. The Yes Men's political satire is worthy of Johnathan Swift--but is acted out in public forums and contains many improvisational and accidental elements, as well as much craft and careful planning. And it is funny, funny! And a very painless way to begin thinking--or to continue thinking--about the ways in which modern global capitalism--and the thinking behind it--impacts our world. True, the documentary is a bit seat-of-the-pants, but it all comes out in the wash. Don't be a film snob; this here is a real event--a document of some great cultural happenings of our time. Yep, if Abbie Hoffman were alive today, this is what he would be doing. |

| There are all kinds of protests. If you remember Abbie Hoffman and his crew, then THE YES MEN may appeal enormously to your sense of humor (and justice). Don't expect any kind of glossy documentary, however; this is by-the-bootstraps moviemaking that just barely gets the job done. But it does. Interestingly--perhaps appropriately--it's the college kids rather than the newscasters or high-level "suits" who get the point the quickest. And the final meeting, at which the announcement of the WTO's disbanding is made, actually draws out some favorable responses from some of the attendees. Is that hope appearing on the horizon? Whatever, this is one funny documentary--for those who understand the subject matter at hand. |
