The House is Black, legendary Iranian poet Forough Farrokhzad's rare documentary, has influenced many of the great directors of Iran's New Wave, including Mohsen Makhmalbaf and Abbas Kiarostami. This haunting film about the leprosy colony in Tabriz, Iran is a compassionate portrait of forgotten people. Straightforward yet sympathetic, The House is Black affords dignity to its subjects, particularly through Farrokhzad's striking poem read in voice-over by the poet herself. Also on this DVD are two important short films by master director Mohsen Makhmalbaf. The School That Was Blown Away is about an old man who visits a school for nomad children, while Images From the Qajar Dynasty explores the visual works from the Qajar Dynasty, including the first photography and cinematography shot in Iran.
