Eraserhead meets Buck Rogers by way of an MGM musical in this bizarre outer-space saga about Samuel Curtis (Cory McAbee), a galactic truck driver looking to make a killing. The film opens with Curtis landing on the freewheeling, all-male asteroid of Ceres. Before winning a dance contest with his buddy Blueberry Pirate -- who is renowned for smuggling fresh fruit -- Curtis learns from Blueberry about a scheme to give a fetal "real live girl" to the similarly male-dominated planet of Jupiter in exchange for a strapping adolescent known solely as "The Boy Who Actually Saw a Female Breast." He in turn will be sent to the all-female planet of Venus where he will spend his life servicing the planet's occupants. Unfortunately, Curtis is followed by the mysterious self-proclaimed birthday boy Professor Hess, who has a tendency to vaporize any and all who come into contact with him. I was completely unprepared for how good this film is. I caught The Billy Nayers Show at NoisePop, and was picqued enough to queue it up, but was really dragging on watching it, especially because of the reviews below.
This is one funny movie. With a twisted sense of humor, you will relish American Astronaut. It's low-budget, but the film is gorgeous, the editing is rock solid, and the acting is largely pretty good. There are no special effects to speak of, but this in no way hampers it. The music is fantastic, all written by Cory McAbee and The Billy Nayers Show. This is NOT an experimental or "art" film, but does require the right sense of humor.
As for the sand kicking scene...well the accompanying soundtrack is good, so if you can stand to watch a 3 minutes music video on MTV, you can certainly stand to watch 2 to 3 minutes of sand kicking. |

Film buffs who thrive on things different will want to check out THE AMERICAN ASTRONAUT, a little "bizarosity" that definitely falls into the category of weird, unusual and just a bit "camp." Combining space travel with film noir and musical comedy, this very home-made creation is occasionally quite funny (the longest piece of sustained humor is provided by Tom Aldredge doing senior stand-up). Stealing from "Star Wars," "Alien" and every bad sci-fi movie of the 50s, writer/director/performer Cory McAbee will make you chuckle now and then (why dogs cannot exist on Venus), and the décor of the space ship's interior is priceless.
At only 90 minutes, the movie goes on too long because most shots are held far beyond their shelf life (the scene featuring the "villain" kicking his recently-created sand piles is excruciating). As member "textheavy" points out, the visuals do have the feeling of a dream but, for me, this was not a dream worth quite so much time. Seeing Annie Golden's name in the opening credits may hook those of you who know and love this performer's work. But she appears only in the last few minutes and is not even given the chance to sing. Talk about missed opportunities and looking a gift horse in the mouth! |

It seems silly - after watching this movie - to read the description and storyline. The storyline takes a back seat to the characters, visuals and music. This is more like a coherent dream.
But don't get me wrong, the story is very linear and clear, and always easy to follow. It combines campy humor with subtle and powerful emotional vignettes.
I can honestly say that I don't know who would like or hate this movie. I'm just glad it was made, because its one of those movies whose imagery stays in your head. |
