A solid sci-fi anime... Reminiscent of Terminator and Guyver... by markhl April 21, 2003 - 9:55 PM PDT

To provide a more accurate summary, Gawl, Ryo, and Koji travel back in time from the future to stop a cataclysmic event that will reshape the world. They disguise themselves as high school students while investigating the organization responsible and trying to find a way to somehow stop them. In their way are "generators," robot-like creatures sent from the future to eliminate them. The suspense builds as more and more powerful generators appear, secrets are slowly revealed, and the plot twists and turns to a surprising conclusion.

Generator Gawl, at its heart, is not a very original anime. The basic premise of time-travel is very terminator-like and generators are reminiscent of the Guyver in design. The main characters are somewhat steoreotypical as well for this anime sub-genre. However, there are enough surprises in the plot and the pace of the story is handled well in the short series (12 episodes) to make this a solid choice for sci-fi anime fans. Gawl's interactions with Masami (a schoolmate whose house the three are boarding at) provide some needed comic relief as well to balance out the more serious aspects of the storyline. The series improves with each episode so you may want to reserve any judgements until the second DVD.
