This is my favorite fighter series. It's not for everyone. Some say having female fighters is just an excuse for fan service. Some say this series doesn't have enough fan service. But I think it has a good balance. Yes, there is fan service in it, but it's not gratuitous fan service. Street fighting in a school uniform without at least some up-skirt would just be unnatural.
Maki is a former gymnast who has grown too tall for competition, yet still craves the tension it gave her. So she decides to follow in her father's footsteps and takes up street fighting.
There are some romantic tensions as well, involving one of her girlfriends, and her mystery man -- a street fighter smitten by her on her climb to the top.
It's not all fighting though. Her little sister, followers and rival all provide plenty of comic relief. She's like Girl-Type Ranma on steroids, with less romantic entanglement and more fighting.

I watched this series long ago as a fansub thinking it'd be a cool, action packed series with some good fan service... I was wrong.
The idea behind the show is a gymnast that gets into streetfights while she's in her schoolgirl outfit against any kind of freak that decides to fight her. While that sounds good, this series is not.
The main character is a girl that looks more like a man with boobs that's annoyingly taller than virtually everyone else in the series. Her arch nemesis is stupid and does not pose a threat, essentially destroying any notion of suspense as the plot rolls from one trainwreck to the next.
Probably the biggest drawback is a "high school" girl that looks like a two or three year old with an annoying voice that says things so stupid nobody could consider it funny.
Even the gigantic boobed, shy girl doesn't provide decent enough fan service to pull this series out of mediocrity. In fact, I'll straight up say the fan service sucks, especially compared to shows like Agent Aika, Najica Blitz Tactics, and Ikki Tousen.
The only thing that's even moderately decent is the fights. It's kind of cool watching the aerial streetfights, but they all seem to lack suspense. The animation is good, but not spectacular.
To be honest, I gave this series a 4 and two of those points came from a scene where the main character gets kicked square in the center of her face by a Mexican Luchadore. That scene was priceless by itself, but not enough to redeem the show.
In all fairness to the show, I could only stand about 5 or so episodes before I gave up on it. Maybe it gets better, maybe it gets worse. If you do decide to watch it, it'll be for the impossible aerial manuevers (which might annoy some people), not the plot or characters. |
