| I haven't followed Hartley in recent years (though I'm catching up in my queue) but I loved his movies in the 90's. The combination of slightly deadpan delivery of dialog and it's existential nature was hilarious to me and I really dug his movies for that and the stories. This DVD has almost none of that. I would go as far to say that these short films are more for his music compositions than anything else. The first several films have no dialog whatsoever. I don't know if it was because I was expecting the Hal Hartley I knew, but I found a lot of this pretty boring. The Sisters of Mercy with Parker Posey had a shadow of the Hartley I knew, but it was more like edits of an unfinished film idea than anything else. I think the filmed excerpts from his play 'Soon' were the most interesting part of this DVD. Strictly for huge fans of HH. |
