A pleasant throw-away caper movie (directed without his usual beat-you-over-the-head style by Brett Ratner), AFTER THE SUNSET is more fun than you might imagine. There's actually some charm and wit here, and the cast is adept at tossing off the reasonably clever dialog written by Craig Rosenberg and Paul Zbyszewski. Ratner even comes up with a neat visual twist toward the end, as what we imagine are separate conversations coalesce.
Brosnan and Hayek handle the "lead thieves" roles well enough, but it's Woody Harrelson and Naomie Harris who really shine. The opening heist is very well done, the closing one not so hot. In between, the scenery is gorgeous enough that you'll probably lay back, drink it in appreciatively, then shrug the whole thing off immediately afterward. |
