If you love non-stop exposition, countless clues and the would-be thrills of a movie treasure hunt, then NATIONAL TREASURE will probably be right up your alley. I almost gave up on it several times along the way but managed, finally, to finish. (The movie goes on for over two hours, so if the Walt Disney Company wants to send me my medal, I'll accept.)
"Manufactured" is a good word for this film, because, as it alternately speeds and creaks along, you can practically see the writers sitting there, tossing their historical facts (and factoids) around, trying to fit them all into place. Nicolas Cage is much less mannered and more relaxed than usual, Diane Kruger almost makes it into the ranks of "upcoming movie star," Justin Bartha provides occasional comic relief, Sean Bean is the alternately smart/dumb villain and Jon Voight and Harvey Keitel are there as "memory lane" for us old folk. As I say, all very manufactured--but at least its wheels are reasonably greased. |
