When a doctor treats a man terrified of going to sleep because of his ever-lengthening dreams, he becomes convinced his patient's unique form of dreaming holds the key to reuniting with his own lost lover -- and to eternal life besides. Soon, he begins experimenting on other patients and himself-- and gets far more than he bargained for. Directed by Higuchinsky, this compellingly creepy film stars Masami Horiuchi and Shuuji Kashiwabara.

Starting off like a twilight episode, this is a story about a man who has dreams that "seem" longer and longer. A night's sleep seems like 2 days in the dream world, then a month, a year, 10 years, etc. If he could dream infinitely, what happens?
The long dreams start to change the person mentally and physically.
From there, however, the story meanders, has a subplot about a girl, waxes philosophic ("if one dreams forever, does one live forever" -- things to that effect), but never really does anything. In the end, some stuff happens (don't want to give spoilers) and you're left scratching your head wondering what happened.
5/10. Starts off nice, loses its way in the middle, and ends with a whimper. |

| Long Dream is based on a horror manga from artist Junji Ito, who created the mangas on which Tomie and Uzumaki were based. This is a low budget TV production that runs around an hour long. The director, Higuchinsky (who also directed Uzumaki) does a fairly good job of working within the limits of his budget. The acting gets a bit melodramatic and the special effects are like something out of 1960s era Star Trek, but the premise is interesting. The synopsis is a bit misleading because Long Dream doesn't necessarily have anything to do with aliens. The premise is this: what would happen if you had dreams that seemingly lasted weeks or years each night? The longer the dream, the less you'd remember about your waking life each morning. Worth a look if you like Asian horror and you don't mind a low low budget. |
