Sometimes, visuals are enough. The sets, cinematography and even the CGI effects in LEMONY SNICKET'S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS combine to make this up-and-down movie a minor success. Jim Carey clowns and goes over the top but with enough energy and wit to sustain himself, and it's also fun to see the likes of Timothy Spall, Meryl Streep and Billy Connolly slumming (and apparently having fun doing it).

There are enough surprises and the occasional clever line to keep you on your toes, while the dark trauma of childhood loss is offset by the fun and adventure. I could have done without some of the youngest child's sub-titled gobbledy-gook, but the ubiquitous Jude Law makes a crisply funny, intelligent, seen-only-in-the-shadows narrator. I imagine that this filmed version is nowhere near the level of the book series (which I have not read). Still, for a children's movie, LSASOUE comes through as better-than-average entertainment.
