What I liked about this series is that it does a good job exploring Miaka, the heroine, as a young adolescent learning how to make difficult life decisions (who to love, facing regretful mistakes, making her first decision away from her family's wishes, facing death). Unlike other anime where all of life's path choices are made by way of guns and violence or by external saviors, sweet and innocent Miaka learns and makes mistakes and grows and decides how she will handle love and loyalty. Of course, this is all in the land of ancient forces with mysterious quests and immoral enemies and action-packed fights and very handsome companions. In addition, I appreciate that this series treats death with respect, and I liked the cadre of supporting and incidental characters. I would recommend this series to teens and anyone who likes a well-made, straightforward fantasy adventure. This DVD contains episodes 27 - 33.
