This disk contains the three episodes of the second OVA series for 3x3 Eyes (Sazan Eyes), which was released 4 years after the first OVA series in disk 1. Taking place 4 years after the events in disk 1, Yakumo has been searching for Pai and finally finds her as a high school student in Japan, suffering from amnesia. With his arrival, demons show up to stop them as they travel to China to find the gate to Pai's world and the key to her memory loss.
This is an engaging, well-paced adventure tale with fighting and interesting characters and demons and even a bit of romance. Unlike in the first OVA series, Yakumo is now a savvy young man who has built allies and martial arts skills during his years of traveling, and the tables are turned this time as he is the one protecting a helpless Pai. I am impressed with the animation of the martial arts fights, especially between Yakumo and the weird priest. Also, the detailing in the various exotic locations gives this a true travel adventure feel, ala Raiders of the Lost Ark.
And oh it can get bloody. How many times can a guy get his head smashed in, or get thrown against a wall in a red splat, or get a claw through his chest, and survive because he's immortal? Everytime Yakumo got hurt, I thought "Ouch!", especially because I like the guy and there was just enough of a chance that he wouldn't survive completely intact. You've been warned!
I just wish there were more episodes created. This series has really grown on me... I might just have to start reading the manga. :-) |

This is a well-told story that kept me intrigued with its good pacing and interesting plot details, despite some more stereotypical adventure touches (being kidnapped to be sacrificed by cultists, typical bad guy standing on a windy pinnacle, Pai being the last of her kind). I like Yakumo because, although he comes across as yet another hapless guy, he's responsible enough to live on his own and he values his friends. The second episode is great because it explores his friends' reactions to Yakumo's new immortality, which forces him to face his reality. This series can also get a bit bloody (heads and hands chopped off, demons mutating inside a human body) but it's not overly gruesome. I don't think you'll learn any deep philosophy watching this series, but the action is entertaining and some of the characters are surprisingly well-developed.
This disk contains the first four OVA episodes from 1991-1992, and the next disk contains the final three OVA episodes from 1995. The story is based on a manga by Yuzo Takada (Blue Seed) but the story arcs are contained, so you don't need to know the manga to understand the plot, thank goodness. |
