great classic sub movie. the cold war is quickly becoming a memory, but in Red October, the US and USSR were still jockeying for position, and every advantage mattered.

sean connery does a great job of course, as do sam neill and tim curry (yes! tim curry before he gained a million pounds!). alec baldwin is young enough that his acting is not annoying or over the top, and don't miss james earl jones :) good acting all around, and immersive visuals.

lots of quotable lines; the script is good- not shakespeare, but my friends and i love to throw the lines around at just the right moments. i can't speak to the authenticity of the sub technology, but it sure *feels* real :) there are sub dogfights, sub and sonar battle tactics, and how often do you get to hear soviet sub-troops singing patriotic songs? there's a very compelling secondary plot about the Soviet officers that really makes you sympathize with them.

don't worry about it if you didn't like the other Jack Ryan/tom clancy movies - this one stands really well on its own, and the jack ryan character doesn't dominate the way he does in later films.
