That deadly demon weed, marijuana, is the subject of this campy exploitation film from the mid-'30s. It is set in a small town and follows the exploits of a group of decadent teen-aged potheads who go one toke over the line and start causing serious trouble. To expose their hedonistic ways, an investigative journalist masquerades as a fountaineer and befriends one particularly troubled young girl and also helps her escape the horrors of her terrifying addiction. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

I'm Krusty the Klown, and I Heartily Endorse This Product or Service by BorisDarling December 15, 2004 - 6:30 PM PST

These are excellent entertainment for all the obvious reasons, but in addition, I enjoyed noticing how their world views and assumptions unfold with the stories - such as they are - and how these core belief systems continue to today.

Since this is the mid-1930's, is it roughly a dozen years since popular American culture discovered Freud. These filmmakers seem eager to concede that the libido of women is quite throughly repressed in our culture.

It is simply that they believe that freeing it produces instant madness and near instant death around the "wayward" victim/other. In this way, they make women the most powerful creatures in the universe, for with one simple display of disregard for western morays, she will certainly unleash a rather lusty demon of death.

Or at least this is what we all hope.
