| Cheerful, lo-cal entertainment. Will Smith's intelligence is a saving grace, Adam Arkin is an asset to any comedy, and Kevin James was surprisingly appealing. As usual in Hollywood fare, we root for schlubby guys wooing beautiful women; the formula wouldn't work in reverse unless the women could become beautiful with 10-15 minutes of makeover. But it's a nice formula anyway, and the script is amusing. |

Occasionally, a film appears that makes me realize all over again that I must be living in some alternate universe. This year it's HITCH--which I gave up on after an hour. This movie is made for our current times: promising wonderful things while lying through its teeth from the outset. The premise--getting men to be completely other than they are in order to land the woman of their dreams--is a one-way ticket to disaster as far as any real relationship is concerned.
Sure, this is a "mainstream" romantic comedy, but you need to be awfully dumbed-down to buy into something so wrongheaded. Will Smith and Kevin James are occasional fun, though the women here take a decidedly back seat (Mendes seems to be confusing attitude with acting chops; the Ellis Island scene is silly, sentimental and finally embarrassing). There are some cute touches, but sixty minutes into this drivel, heading back to the daily grind seemed like a pleasure. |
