this movie tells a great story. it's complemented by occasionally gorgeous visuals, as well as some interesting insight into thai culture and the world of kickboxing.

It's funny how the same old clichés somehow "aren't" when they're used in a movie that deliberately turns things upside down. The Thai film BEAUTIFUL BOXER is one such cliché-ridden romp that fascinates from first frame to last, as it charts the rise and growth of Thailand's famous boxer/kickboxer who embraced the sport in order to help his parents and save money for a sex change operation.
The lead actor is beautiful and entrancing, sweet but full of grit. By the end, if you stick with it, this movie will take you many of the same places you've often been--but make them new, exotic and special. Unlike movies about women boxers ("Girlfight," "Million $ Baby"), in which women try to act like/out-male the men, due to its juxtaposition of violent, testosterone-fueled boxing and a character full of caring, supportive, feminine spirit, "Beautiful Boxer" becomes pretty close to one-of-a-kind. |
