This is a great Halloween date film with someone you are comfortable crying your eyes out with. Bad: plot holes big enough to slide the Emerald Palace through. Editing is as lost as Jim Thompson (the American businessman who disappeared in Thailand, stuff of legend). Predictable to the point of being as round as a karmic cycle (I guessed the surprise half way through the movie). Good:visually stunning. The acting was sincere, although the wife seemed to be relegated only to crying. Easy job. Overall, this is a stunning, emotional ghost story you can watch if you DONT want to see a scary horror flick but don't want to seem like you wont jones for Halloween. I watched the ending twice. This movie, as a simple experience, is so beautifully complete, and such a pure expression of innocence lost in Thailand (and such a universal message), that it connected with a part of me that ached with understanding. If I may be so bold, while the writing wasn't of the same caliber, the emotional audacity was Shakesperian. I really, really, really recommend this movie to everyone. Be prepared to bawl yourself weak. Now hie yerself out to see Scary Movie 3. Its great for completely the opposite reasons. |
