I couldn't quite keep the mystery plot straight, but didn't mind. I was much more interested in what each character might do or say next. What a difference from a present-day mystery thriller! No global corporations, no epic car chases or shootouts, no plastic-perfect bodies or faces, very tranquil pace. I could watch Gene Hackman nap, to say nothing of his wife (Susan Clark), outside love interest (Jennifer Warren), and mystery suspect James Woods. I had no idea the nymphet was Melanie Griffith. Harris Yulin, a "that guy" actor I enjoy, has a minor but memorable part. This is neither a tight nor a moving story, but it still held my interest at every moment as a kind of reverie in which we watch characters it's easy to care about.
