Great transition from graphic novel to film.Great cast. The best being Mickey Rourke as Marv. The visual effects are fantastic. It's as if the whole movie was filmed inside of a comic book. I see some complaints that the film is too long. I disagree. Most moviegoers theses days are used to shorter films. Usually 90 minutes. I think that the effects MTV and VH1 have shortened averyones movie watching attention span.

The main attraction of Sin City is the visual design. Frank Miller's art is wisely chosen as the focus of the film. However, the stories aren't very interesting and they tend to go on too long, and with very little purpose. Adding to the probelms is a script that is full of noir cliches, and some truly groan-inducing dialogue. The acting performances aren't particularly strong either, with the possible exception of Mickey Rourke, but again that probably has more to do with the script. I would recommend seeing the movie despite the obvious flaws, as it is visually stunning, and really succeeds on that level.

I disagree that the movie was too long. The cast is huge with talent and I challenge anyone to name the weak performance (there is a reason the rating is so high). The movie is woven with story threads ala "Pulp Fiction" but the comparison stops there. The Cinematography is phenomenal, Direction flawless... and the story works with all of the special effects and black and white frames with color accents. This is a gritty, yet polished effort that was a pleasure to watch. I further assert that in this recent drought of "quality" movie releases this is a shining gem that will age well and be a favorite shining star on DVD ?
Nice "Look"--but Just Too Much of It.

Cynical without being particularly intelligent, SIN CITY's biggest problem is that it's just too long. Cut a half-hour and most of us would be in movie heaven (or at least enjoying things more). But, as is often the case with Robert Rodriguez, the guy doesn't know when to quit.
Though the "look" is original, the action swift, bloody and sometimes funny, and the cast full of big names (and even a little talent), eventually, the damn thing just... starts... to... bore... you. If you're a comic book fan, you'll see "Sin City," no matter what--but really now, admit it: If you (or me or most any adult movie-lover) had been the editor on this one, the film would have timed out at a much shorter length. |
