Mourning the recent death of his mother, Phillipe must come to terms with his growing alienation from his younger brother André, his only remaining relative. Time and space become irrelevant as he tries to make sense of the universe and his place in it. As the two rival super powers race to conquer space, childhood memories unfurl to act as markers in this feature film about reconciliation. Winner of the FIPRESCI critic's prize at the 2004 Berlin International Film Festival and the Genie Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, and punctuated by a brilliant music score from Benoit Jutras, La Face Cachée de la Lune takes its audience to another world in a unique film experience directed and performed by Robert Lepage.

It's so rare to encounter a genuinely unique movie like THE FAR SIDE OF THE MOON that over-praising it is probably inevitable. First frame to last, this is an adventure for the mind, eye and heart. Flipping back and forth in time from fantasy to reality, character to character, country to country, sexuality to sexuality, the trip is so full of surprise, fun, intelligence and restrained emotion that I can't imagine any alert, intelligent viewer not capitulating almost at once to the magic that writer/director Robert Le Page creates.
The movie deals with death, space, gravity, family, love, work and finding our place in all of this, and if there are a few ideas and connections that you won't or can't make, there are so many more that you will. Save this unusual film for a time when you want a challenge, one that you'll most likely--and most happily--meet. |

There could definitely be something in this movie, but first of all it's filmed like a TV movie, and then it's edited like they barely had enough footage, so you get scenes that are boring and don't bring anything to the atmosphere nor the understanding. I finish watching 99% of the movies I se, but this one... I couldn't. |

| An absolutely fantastic, deeply human and hilarious film, one of the most satisfying I've seen in years. Lepage plays both estranged brothers, and is note-perfect as the overbearing weatherman and the despondent academic. The visual effects and the trademark Lepage scene transitions are really clever, and are integral to the story and not a distraction from story weaknesses. I would really like to say more, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone. A minor miracle. |
