I have seen the two more common (western) versions of this story, and while I'd still say Valmont is my favorite, this new one really blew me away with the sets, costumes, and art direction in general. It is a feast for the eyes even if the story is familiar.
I never would have thought the Korean version would also be the most erotic. While not being explicit, there is some nudity and plenty of sexual tension. After all, it is largely about seduction!
Excellent film, whether you know the story or not. |

| Watch this film for an amazing historical drama with a fine attention to detail. We don't often get a glimpse of life in Korea, and it sure beats all that played Euro-historical stuff. |

| Better than Valmont and Dangerous Liasions. There's a moral here. Food for thought but not preaching or neatly tied up conclusions. Art imitates life. |

This Korean (yes!) version of "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" is certainly hands-down the most beautiful of any filmed so far. The cinematography, sets and costumes are eye-popping, and the performances are quite good, as well. The only thing that keeps me from rating UNTOLD SCANDAL any higher on the chart is the usual story that finally grows tiresome.
Only Milos Foreman's "Valmont," which probed motives more deeply and included a vast and rich canvas, succeeded in making this story worth the time spent. For an experience of jaw-dropping beauty, however (and the unique opportunity to watch something quintessentially French morph seamlessly into Korean) don't miss this one. |
