The spirit of Jane (Life and Death of Great American Cities) Jacobs is evident in this benchside look at an unidentified neighborhood park in, perhaps, Queens or some other NYC borough. Though the narration and pacing may be too touchy/feely for some, I greatly enjoyed getting to know some of the regulars as they shared space with fellow neighbors of various demographics. Echoing the sentiments of the lady who watched the homeless woman's stuff (and was touched by her offer of reciprocity), I too would like there to be a coffee shop there, and, heck, to chat with her. We get to know a young, verbal, savvy, cute couple who met each other through a territoriality dispute involving "my" picnic table.
The real star of the film is the park's maintenance/landscape manager, a guy who took over responsibility for a derelict and forsaken crime zone, and, with a stalwart crew, turned it into a haven. Inspired, homeowners surrounding the park spruced up their scenes and the area became a magnet for recreation and social interactions. The man's modest manner belies his status as a hero in our midst. |
