A relaxing vacation for Aika takes an unexpectedly stressful turn when a master manipulator appears on the scene to spoil the heroine's fun in the sun in Project A-Ko creator Katsuhiko Nishijima's panty-fueled anime adventure. Seduced by a sworn enemy in disguise and determined to survive with her heart and inhibitions still in tact, Aika draws arms to take on her nemesis and get back to the poolside before summer draws to a close. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The title of this show is confusing; it is actually the second of the two Aika disks: the first two OVAs were put onto the "Naked Missions" disk.
It's almost embarassing to critique a show that's mostly about panty shots, but if you are even reading this, you probably already know that so we'll take it from there. "Agent Aika" really doesn't live up to its promise, and that failure becomes more serious in these three episodes. Aika is actually a pretty good character -- funny, cool, compassionate, elegant and hip. In other hands she would have made a great heroine. This show's character designs are very appealing. The animation is better than it had to be -- somewhat better than in the preceding two disks, with many funny expressions and clever touches. The show's basic concept had a lot of potential. The women are often genuinely sexy.
Unfortunately it's all wasted on a childish, trivial story centered around Aika's humiliation and embarassment. The Hargen story of the preceding two OVAs has petered out, but the animators were unable to come up with any interesting ideas, so Aika and her friends battle some remnants of Hargen's all-female army in a series of silly and inconclusive battles. Someone gives Aika a date rape drug and tricks her into kissing a woman. Someone tricks her into a humiliating fake "medical exam." And so on.
It's just sad. The animators' love for women prompted them to create a strong, beautiful character, and their hatred for women made them do nothing but shame and insult her. Watch Aika for the pretty pictures and imagine a better story. |
