Really takes the bite out of the Jaws legacy

I took a chance on this legendary bad movie knowing what I would be in for. As a fan of bad cinema, I was hoping for an ineptly-made feature capable of invoking the kind of laughter other likable, expensive turkeys like SHOWGIRLS and BATTLEFIELD EARTH could elicit. What I witnessed instead was a horror film without one scare and a drama where the actors deliver their lines without a hint of enthusiasm. Apparently, we are expected to be put on the edge of our seats for every shark scene as well as the ludicrous shark POV shots. It's simply shoddy merchandise from start to finish, riddled with shopworn dialog, enough continuity errors to interest the folks at Guiness and a script that quickly grows attenuated. Try to envision a JAWS feature where all the shark attacks are shot in slow motion, where you can plainly see the eye bolts on the shark's back and the mechanical apparatus used to drive it in half the scenes, where the writers, obviously clueless in developing an original story line, mimic the plot and characters from Speilberg's original to the point where you can't help but to roll your eyes... good grief!

What I'm hoping for is that someday director Joseph Sargent (COLOSSUS:THE FORBIN PROJECT, THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE) will release a special edition with a commentary track explaining what went wrong during the shooting of this trainwreck. While we're at it, let's include another track with Michael Caine's take on the calamity. He must have been paid well, because at last report he hasn't even seen it!
