This collection features three episodes from the original video anime The Slayers, a fantasy adventure saga about powerful sorceress Lina Inverse and her serpent partner, Nahga, as they fight the forces of evil. In "Scary Chimera Plan," mad scientist Diol makes clones to help him capture Lina. In "Jeffrey's Knighthood," a psychotic mother hires Lina and Nahga to train her son to be a knight. In "Mirror, Mirror," a magician steals the dangerous Shadow Reflector, which can create a duplicate person with an exact opposite personality. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

It's The Slayers! "But wait," you say, "who's that dark-haired girl on the cover?" Why, that's Naga the Service - I mean, the Serpent! Hey, just a second, she wasn't in the tv series! Yes, this is a completely separate story than the tv series, but you probably knew that. That doesn't mean it's not good! Sure, it's about as episodic as they come, but in this case that works for the good of the show. This is a pretty light, shallow walk through a fairly traditional fantasy setting, but its humor keeps it special!
In The Scary Chimera Plan, a sorcerer wants to use the head of the great and powerful Lina Inverse as part of a three-headed chimera. But that part of the plot takes a back seat to the sub-plots; I must say I could have nightmares about Naga and her clone army charging around, with that horrible laughter... *shiver*... It's terrifying, in an off-the-wall, hilarious sort of way. Naturally, the humor continues through the other two episodes, but there's no real need to get into the details (but, if you watch nothing else, you must watch Mirror, Mirror for reasons I will not spoil for you.)
It's absolutely necessary to point out that the English dub is really good. Lina's voice actress, Cynthia Martinez, can define with great skill the meaning of the word "delivery", and Naga's laughter is frighteningly convincing. It's annoying, but it's supposed to be; I can imagine, with horror, what it must be like to hear that laugh in person. Surely any real town would react in much the same way as the town in the first episode. This baby's a must see (or hear) for dubbed-enthusiasts everywhere; I get a warm, fuzzy feeling in my ears just thinking about it.
Yes, get a look at this one. If that doesn't work, get a second look. Then check out the other OVAs and movies, all staring the destruction array of Bandit Killer Lina and Naga the Serpent, with better animation and voice acting than any of the tv series, although the plot isn't quite on the same level. Still, if you're not getting your daily recommended value of light-hearted comedy, this will definitely fill your weekly quota. Give it seventy-five minutes of your time, you won't regret it. |
