Louis Leterrier and Luc Besson continue their history of fun-for-cinemaphiles with the unusual, genre-highpoint UNLEASHED. Giving Jet Li his chance to show real acting chops in addition to great action chops (more, in fact, than in "Hero") and Morgan Freeman the opportunity to relax into subtle fun (rather than having to handle the prim stodginess of a "Million Dollar Baby"), the movie manages to combine fab fights, minimal gore and a sweet, sentimental (but thankfully rather different) "family" story. No surprise that the movie didn't draw crowds: the charming, "felt" middle section is all sweet narrative without any violence, so the action-only crowd gave up. Too bad, because the movie goes for broke during its last twenty minutes.

Leterrier wastes no time on needless repetition: he makes his points slickly and quickly and then moves on. Besson's script is slight but sly and perfectly serviceable; Bob Hoskins makes a super-duper (and often funny) villain; and Kerry Condon provides an utterly winning if rather plain alternative to the usual sexy "femme." (Whoops--there's another reason the movie didn't draw: no Jessica Alba.) The supporting cast, from Hoskins' henchmen to Phyllida Law as a classy conservatory head, is chosen with care and performs as expected. Sure, this is a time-waster of sorts; executed this well, however, your time won't be.
