Synopsis
Akira's life takes a rather dramatic turn one day when he ventures outside to buy a new computer, and ends up with something quite a bit more than he bargained for! When he opens the box he discovers that his computer is a little more advanced (in more ways than one) than he ever dreamed. She's a biomechanical machine named Pixie! The only thing for sure is that Akira's life just got a whole lot more complicated. Fortunately, he's got the one thing everyone craves: a loyal companion and partner who will literally do anything for him! But, Akira's finding out that keeping her running takes more out of him than he ever imagined since her energy source is his "molecular input!" Akira definitely isn't going to be able to save himself for marriage any more but can his sex drive handle her continual need for uploads? With his friends dropping by, how is Akira going to hide Pixie's true nature? And why are the biomechanical computers trying to destroy each other? An erotic comedy that will keep you rolling until the very end!

I Dream of Mimi belongs to that genre of anime that involves the nice geek next door getting hold of an anatomically correct, tremendously cute and willing female android, and then not having the slightest idea what to do with her. Well, beyond the obvious. Unlike much "fan service"-drenched anime that is mostly nudity that never tiptoes beyond innuendo, this is a sex comedy that includes actual sex.

Nevertheless, Mimi skirts the hentai label by not getting that up close and personal. In fact, I found the depictions of sex (with what, you may fairly ask) in Mimi to be less annoying than the intimations of robotic sexual detail in the PG-13 rated Chobits. Though its American distributor wasn't taking any chances, and has the subtitles sending the teenage characters off to another one of those mysterious "colleges" that hentai protagonist always seem to be attending.

To be sure, Mimi does not plumb the existential depths of Video Girl Ai (in which virtual girl meets Pinocchio). It never gets as Oedipal as Mahoromatic (is she his lover, mother, or his babysitter?). It's not as smart about human relationships as My Dear Marie (in which android girl meets Shaw's Pygmalion), though it does sneak in some clever metaphors about fidelity. You will never think about "write-protect" in quite the same way again.

But undoubtedly, I Dream of Mimi is the ubergeekiest of them all. When an incensed Mimi discovers that her better-than-real-life self getting upstaged by a lowly PC (with only 640KB RAM, no less), Akira (her ostensible "owner") unhelpfully explains, "But I've always wanted to play this game." The one live human girl in Akira's life, Shimada (whom Mimi confuses with her computer), doesn't fare much better from this gang of hopeless nerds.

It would have been nice to see something substantial happen with the Akira/Shimada relationship, but this is ultimately a story about competing PC platforms, and, sorry Mac fanatics, but here Apple is cast as the ugly American. Well, not "ugly," more like ridiculously well-endowed. A trio of gaijin "Nacintosh" avatars (surrounded by apple icons, lest you not get the point), are trying (with really bad Japanese) to take over the Japanese computer market.

This cinematic aberration deserves some clarification. Macs are always the good guys, right? The underdogs? As in the rest of the world, 90-plus percent of PCs in Japan run Windows. Indeed, most PC components installed in PCs everywhere ultimately come from OEM manufacturers in Japan, Korea and China. These OEMs also sell PCs under their own labels. So Apple alone remains an identifiably American brand, the big, bad multinational.

Consider electronics giant NEC (a much more gigantic multinational than Apple). The computer Akira sets out to buy originally, the 9821, is an actual NEC computer model. Its predecessor, the 9801, was an 8086 clone of the first IBM PC, running a Japanese port of Microsoft DOS. But unlike the IBM PC, NEC's proprietary bus "locked in" the user base and made it the dominant PC platform in Japan. (What IBM tried to do with Microchannel and failed.)

So the battle comes down to an American proprietary platform (Mac) versus a Japanese proprietary platform (NEC). It's done with enough smarts that you can't help wishing they'd taken a higher, wittier road rather than the low road of the rather banal "harem" sex comedy. After all, if they ever did a version 2.0, they could throw in Linux and XP and Longhorn and Apple's defection from PowerPC to Intel. Imagine the alliterative possibilities.

I have seen many anime films over the years, with several of them teetering precariously between silly teenage fluff and more explicit "adult" fare. The whole presentation and plot of this film seems geared toward young males of about 10-12 years of age who are into computers and technology. There are all sorts of sexual inuendos but nothing explicit...jokes that a pubescent boy might make to his friends (I've got a HUGE harddrive, etc.). Really very silly stuff with what I consider little entertainment value for anyone over 12 years old.

Haven't I seen this plot somewhere before? Duh, Steel Angel Kurumi, Chobits, Video Girl AI. This version of innocent boy awakening sexy female android that obeys her master is completely corny. It would be better if the series had some more substance.

{Fan-Service: brief nudity or panty-shots inserted in an anime as a "service" for fans} Here are some examples for animes with excessive fan-services - good for horny guys looking to step-up from "The Man Show".
