One danger of working with the political material is that it can cease to be funny and instead pick up underlying anger and dissent, particularly during these times.
This is the only comedy show I've seen so far that comes with what I can only describe as a lunatic standing outside the theater yelling (damning?) Bill and the people going into the theater as immoral and unpatriotic and whatnot. If I didn't know better I would have thought Bill actually hired an actor to play the nut job. But I do know better; I've actually seen that kind of people.
As for the material and performance inside the theater, Bill reminds me of the countless people on talk shows where they say things not so much to convey what their beliefs are but more to get the audience to react to (hopefully agree with) them. Throughout the show, Bill would say something, sometimes funny, sometimes not, and the audience would 99% of the time applaud and cheer in agreement. I didn't really notice a lot of laughing.
Sure. Bush for whatever reason spends what seems to be an eternity to read to a bunch of kids after being told about the first tower. I can imagine George Carlin or Lewis Black taking this and say something that'll get you ROFL. But Bill proceeds to illustrate the degree of incompetence and inappropriateness of Bush's behavior. There's nothing illegitimate about his claims, to be sure; what Bush did was mind-boggling. The audience understandably cheered and applauded in agreement. But this is supposed to be a comedy show, not a political rally. I only wished John Kerry talked like that back in 2004.
Blue folks will love to cheer along and enjoy someone articulate what they've felt all this time. Red folks will sit there feeling indignant. Unfortnately not many people are laughing.
