Meant to be a whimsical sword-and-sorcery film about a prince out to save his princess from the jaws of the Beast, Krull has enough scenes borrowed from blockbuster predecessors (Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Robin Hood, Star Wars) and is gentle enough to be rather derivative, ordinary fare. Prince Colwyn (Ken Marshall) has inherited a kingdom under siege by the evil Beast, and not only has to rid the land of the monster, but he has to rescue his bride Lyssa (Lysette Anthony) from the Beast's clutches as well. In his magical land, horses can sometimes fly, medieval castles can harbor weapons that light up, and before he can defeat the Beast, the prince has to get his hands on the glaive (French for "double-edged sword"), a razor-sharp, magical weapon capable of killing the monster. One of the more notable aspects of Krull is that a 30-year old Liam Neeson plays the bit part of Kegan, in only his third full-length feature film. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

| I give this movie a relatively high score, because I assume you are only watching it if you are a fan of cheesy sci-fi/fantasy B movies. While not quite as classic as "Conan", this movie is well worth an evening's mindless entertainment. |

...You know what I'm talking about - this movie is worth watching only from this point of view. I looked up the director on IMDB & discovered he also did Bullitt and Breaking Away. Bizarre! The main guy, Colwyn, is a total Patrick Swayze clone. Love those '80's metal' tight-pants. They should have called it Cyclops, because it's the cyclops that saves their butt every time. Note the young Qui-Gon and Hagrid among the bandits...The thing that blows my mind is how much effort (and $ presumably) they spent on the special effects and set design, and it still looks cornball! The credits list Italy and Lanzarote(Canary Islands) as the locations they shot in - they are both really beautiful & lend a needed boost to the production. LOTR used New Zealand locations in the same way, but bless them for going the extra mile on FX. Then again, I hope there will always be films made that fall under the goofy genre the way Krull does. I had to rent this one to put to rest a childhood memory of wanting to see Krull so badly, but at the last minute going to Yor instead! If you rent this, you should check out the making-of featurette, narrated by... Tom Bosley! (Lysette Anthony's fro is beyond humongous at the read-through) Good times. |
