Synopsis
The situation worsens and Jinto finds himself at the center of events he doesn't really understand. Lafiel has been ordered to escort Jinto, a non-combatant civilian, to safety before the battle begins. Despite her protests, Lafiel finally agrees and the two set off to warn the Empire of the attack.

As the crew of the Gosroth prepares for what may indeed be their final battle against overwhelming odds, Jinto and Lafiel head toward the Baron Febdash Territory in an attempt to refuel and get word to the main fleet. But the Baron has plans of his own, and he won't allow anyone - not even a member of the Imperial Star Forces and an Imperial Star Princess- to stand in his way.

Space battles like Star Trek by hneline1 September 10, 2002 - 6:00 PM PDT

The first space battle of the series occurs when the Humankind Empire Abh?s war cruiser Gosroth is attacked by ships of the United Mankind. This battle reminded me of how Star Trek depicts space sortees -- lots of bridge command, ship maneuvering, shield and weapons status. It was pretty intense, a good war room drama. Then, when Lafiel and Jinto refuel their shuttle at a local Baron's territory, we get a pretty intense psycho-political-social drama. As I've said before, I like this anime series because of the believable characters, the smart dialog, and the "feel" that it has as a solid science fiction story -- none of those improbable fantasy or magical elements, and there are scientific explanations given for technological advances. The episodes here are no exception. Look at the DVD Extras for background info about the Imperial Space Fleet and the Abh culture. My only complaint is that there are only three episodes on this disk, so it goes too quickly. Also, I watched parts in English and the dubbing was ok, but it didn't seem to convey the same subtle emotion as in Japanese. To understand the real chemistry in the friendship between Lafiel and Jinto, watch it in Japanese with English subtitles. ;-)

An excellent Hard SF offering well-developed in all respects thanks to its great narrative depth. As one of a handful of anime series to be based on a series of novels, it has a distinct SF-novel feel.

Although I've seen a lot I've liked, these are the ones I had to mention (not necessarily in any particular order).
