Fate and destruction of the entire universe resting on one conflicted youngster's shoulders... again by hneline1 January 28, 2003 - 10:46 AM PST

If you like CLAMP's series for slightly older audiences (X/1999, X the series, Tokyo Babylon), you'll probably enjoy RG Veda too. It has the same elements of good vs. evil on a godly scale, heroes with superhuman destructive powers, imprisoned divine seers who foretell doom, angsty familial conflict with an estranged mother and a just-discovered sibling, a finely detailed drawing style, and lots and lots and LOTS of long flowing hair.

As for me, I should stop watching CLAMP. Although I think CLAMP's series for younger audiences (Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth) are great for their age groups, the theme of fate and destruction of the entire universe resting on one conflicted youngster's shoulders just doesn't appeal to me as an adult (well, unless there's more to the series than internal angst) (see Neon Genesis Evangelion or Fushigi Yugi for complex approaches to world-saving). There is no explanation of motive for most of the characters so they become little more than archetypes of the handsome protector, the brash warrior, the stalwart amazon, and the mysterious trickster. This is yet another short anime where the story has missing chunks or an inconclusive ending because we are suppose to read the manga for those plot details (see Angel Sanctuary, Earthian, X/1999). And I might as well add that the animation style doesn't appeal to me -- guys with very broad shoulders, exposed chests, slim hips, small heads and almond eyes are an acquired taste, IMHO.

So if you like this style and these themes, by all means enjoy watching this title. If you haven't seen anything by the manga collective CLAMP, RG Veda is not a bad place to start and it's only two episodes long. Also, keep in mind that despite the title, RG Veda is not a direct retelling of the Hindu myth. Although characters and situations may have been adapted from the Veda stories, there is nothing Hindu about this anime production -- it's typical sword and sorcery fantasy.
