The main character in Following is a neurotic Brit who fancies himself a writer and uses this as an excuse to pursue his favorite pastime--following strangers. Dodgey as this sounds he manages to find people who are more dangerous than himself.

Christopher Nolan invented many of the narrative devices he would later use in Memento in this film. The main character is a writer shocked at being written into someone else's story. The time dislocation arises from his attempt to move the blocks of the story around, figure out how he was double (and triple) crossed, and maybe write himself a better ending. This is an interesting structure and it works nearly perfectly but the director felt he needed a long unnatural monologue to lay everything out for the viewer.
