just not that good

three of my favorites in this period piece - depp, turturro, and ricci, but it really just didn't do much for me.

there's lots of music- opera and gypsy and yiddish folk songs... if you like period costuming and lots of singing, you might dig this film. there are political commentary bits; there are love story bits; there are personal Hard Choice bits.

i didn't find the chemistry between depp and ricci to be compelling, and i felt like i kept waiting for the story to pick up, which it really doesn't. i think that the main problem is that the whole story is focused on ricci's character's life, but there's almost no exposition of how she feels; she has shockingly little dialog, and she can only do so much with her eyes, ya know?
