Grey Gardens is working its way towards the top of my favorite movies list. Focusing on Jackie O's aunt and first cousins' eccentric life in a run down mansion in East Hampton, Grey Gardens is touching, humorous, and outrageous.
Edith Bouvier Beale (Little Edie) went to live with her mother (Big Edie) in 1952. 24 years later, the famed Maysles brother's make a documentary about them. There's really not much more here than the 2 women and the 2 directors sitting in different rooms of the house talking -- but it certainly is fascinating. The insanity going on here cannot really be described. Little Edie's sense of style is unparalleled -- although recently designers like Todd Oldham have been jocking her style for the runway -- and Big Edie's arm flaps look surprisingly comforting. . .but I think that's just me, it must have something to do with my mom's own arm flaps.
It's a Criterion DVD, so it looks great and has good Special Features (commentary, interviews, photos, an extended audio interview with Little Edie, trailers, and more.) Certainly worth the rental! |
