In this hit '80s hybrid of the horror movie and the teen flick, a single mom and her two sons become involved with a pack of vampires when they move into an offbeat Northern California town. Lucy (Dianne Wiest) and her sons, Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam (Corey Haim), move to Santa Carla to live with Lucy's lovable but curmudgeonly father (Barnard Hughes). Lucy gets a job from video store-owner Max (Edward Herrmann), then begins dating him, while Sam hangs out with Edward and Alan Frog (Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander), a pair of vampire-obsessed comic-shop clerks. Soon Michael falls in with some actual vampires after becoming enamored of one of their victims: Star (Jami Gertz), a gypsy-like vixen who is trying to hold onto her humanity even though vampire leader David (Kiefer Sutherland) wants to play Peter Pan to her Wendy. When Michael visits the cavernous hangout of David and his cronies and unwittingly drinks from a wine bottle full of vampiric blood, he becomes an unwilling member of the bloodsucker biker gang. Soon, it's up to Sam and the Frog brothers to destroy David and his ilk without killing Michael and Star. Shot on location in the coastal California town of Santa Cruz and directed by Hollywood pro Joel Schumacher, The Lost Boys became a pop-culture phenomenon thanks to its attractive young stars, offbeat soundtrack, and hip, clever marketing campaign; the film's tagline -- "Sleep all day. This film was religion to me when I was in high school. I remember thinking it was such a deep movie, with genuine scares, great acting, and holy-Kiefer-wouldn't-it-be-cool-to-be-one vampires.
My, how time and experience do shift one's view of things.
After 13 years of not having seen it, I had a great time watching this film again, but for entirely different reasons. For one, I didn't realize how hammy all the acting is. Kiefer Sutherland alone chews through enough scenery that I'm surprised the sets didn't collapse. And when you get the two Coreys (Haim & Feldman) together? Hoo boy.
Speaking of Corey Haim, HE LOVES THE 80'S! Every single one of his costumes in this film is lifted straight from a Cyndi Lauper video. This stuff is howlingly funny. The costumes, haircuts, decor, music... EVERYTHING dates this film.
I know I'm being rough on it, but I really do still like this film. It's campy, goofy fun, with a decent soundtrack and lots of well-crafted lines. Perhaps it's just nostalgia, but I'd recommend a rent to anyone who likes non-serious vampire flicks, 80's time capsules, or the guy who played Bill in "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" wearing a bad blonde mullet wig and half-shirt. Spot the box of Peanut Butter Boppers for bonus points!

| This is just such a great movie on so many levels. There's the trials of being a mother, the relationship between brothers, the relationships between firends, the problems of fitting in, and how to slay a band of vampires and not get caught. i must say, I really loved all the characters, minus the girl maybe. They were all so deep and I really felt for them. Also, one of the smartest horror movie characters ever! Your brother's a vampire, you run to your room and lock both doors. Good job. Also a nice surprise ending, and maybe the top 4 vampire deaths I have ever seen in a movie. not to mention a fantastic soundrack. Over all stupendous movie. |
