Synopsis
A magazine article about real-life car racing gangs for Vibe becomes this fast-paced automotive thriller from director Rob Cohen. Paul Walker stars as Brian O'Conner, a youthful FBI agent investigating a series of hijackings by going undercover with a street gang led by charismatic Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel). Caught up in Toretto's world of gang conflict that is resolved in late-night car races, Spindler starts to sympathize with his chief suspect and falls in love with Toretto's younger sister Mia (Jordana Brewster). In the meantime, Spindler initially suspects the wrong gang of complicity in the crimes he's probing, while Toretto remains involved in a forbidden romance, à la Romeo and Juliet, with his girlfriend Letty (Michelle Rodriguez). The Fast and the Furious co-stars Ted Levine, Rick Yune, and Matt Schulze. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Stupid plot but who cares with all the pretty cars! by hneline1 November 22, 2003 - 2:27 PM PST

Stop with this stupid plot about masked robbers in black Civics hijacking semi trucks. The best scenes in this film are the ones where real import cars and their real owners show up -- the first race sequence when Paul Walker drives his Eclipse to a nighttime rally, and the Race Wars meet in the San Bernardino desert where Director Rob Cohen got 1500 real import cars and owners to appear as extras. There isn't much else that caught my attention.

So don't watch this film if you want anything resembling a plot or acting -- it's all about the cars, and what pretty cars they are. Um, ok, so Vin Diesel is quite a hunk too. :-) There are a bunch of extras on the DVD including a Director's Commentary, a "making of" feature, the original article about import car street racing that inspired this movie, deleted scenes, production notes, and multiple camera angle shots for the final crash sequence. If you liked the movie in the theaters, the extras are worth taking a look at.

A list of DVDs that I bought and proudly store on the top shelf of my DVD rack. Note that I don't put poorly packaged DVDs on this shelf, so Warner movies get excluded. Also movies with bad sequels that I still buy tend to get demoted with them.

My favorite race film Heart Like a Wheel isn't out on DVD yet! But where is Jackie Chan's Thunderbolt?? Links in "comments" will fetch all titles in a series.
