From the makers of The Eyes of Tammy Faye and Party Monster comes this lurid look at the seamy world of street hustlers. Paid 50 dollars for their time, 101 male prostitutes -- spanning all ages, ethnicities, and personal backgrounds -- are questioned by the filmmakers about their lives. Over the course of the film's 78 minutes, viewers are introduced to a sadist, an ex-gang member, a transsexual, and many others, all of whom hock their wares in and around Los Angeles. 101 Rent Boys premiered at the 2000 San Francisco Lesbian & Gay Film Festival before its televised run on Cinemax. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

so what kind of guy sells his body for money?
101 Rent Boys is an answer to that question (actually, about a hundred answers, i guess). it's not the only answer, and maybe not even the most creative answer. but it feels real and sincere in its desire to show a slice of the world that these guys live in, which is about all you can hope for in a documentary like this.
one of the other reviewers called it peurile and conservative. i really disagree. i felt like the guys interviewed came across as real people; each with his own story, personality, goals, intentions, etc etc. in editing, some patterns were definitely highlighted, but i came away with the feeling that these rent boys aren't really all that different from any other random group of 101 men taken from a given profession. which is pretty much what they were trying to show. |

| I confess I reached for the remote to speed forward to the end of this dvd - though not from boredom with this so-called documentary. Fact is, I enjoyed seeing these "boys" reveal themselves as real human beings with the normal flaws of logic and thinking. What got to bother me then? The arrogance of many of them as revealed in their unwise comments about other people? The barely hidden fake feelings of hurt and sensitivity? The trashy absolutism of the points of view? The puerile comments and grabs at the cash handed to them on camera? The relentless interviewing by topics? I enjoyed seeing the hustler variety in L.A. though I suspect a much broader spectrum exists there that we do not see in this "documentary". And I suspect the age range of hustlers in L.A. goes much younger in age, as well as much older, than shown in this film. I wished for more snippets of hustlers at their workplaces on the streets, or in action on their cellphones arranging their appointments, or anything that supports the label "documentary". I give the filmmakers credit for their desire to bring us this sleazy subject, though I wish they had spent more brain power in the treatment of this old profession. I give it a 7 as a terrufic guide to the next genuine documentarian as to What Not To Do. |

This film was s#$%. total waste of time. they stole 2 hours of my life! i saw it at the gay lesbian film fest in sf and the directors embarrased themselves in the q&a after the show (quite a feat considering how embarrasing the film allready was for them as artists) by demonstrating how biased, conservative in their veiws towards sex and lamely social darwanist they were. AMAZINGLY puerile, worthless, boring and stupid. their attempts at exploitation were almost funny (especially their ignorance of their own failures) but ultimately not even that...just..... well.....boring...... |
