The frequently recurring title characters, employed by writer and director Kevin Smith as supporting players in several of his films, are put to rest with this comedy that focuses on them exclusively. Jay (Jason Mews) and Silent Bob (Smith) are a pair of stoned New Jersey slackers who have long been used as the templates for a pair of popular comic book heroes, Bluntman and Chronic. When they learn that their alter egos are to be turned into a major motion picture without their consent or compensation, the pair sets off for Hollywood to sabotage the production. Along the way, they encounter an ape, a nun (Carrie Fisher), the cast of Scooby-Doo, a Charlie's Angels-style band of sexy women who use them as stool pigeons in a diamond heist, and an unhinged wildlife ranger (Will Ferrell). They also meet up with some regulars from the Smith canon, including Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams), Brian O'Halloran as Dante Hicks, Jason Lee as Banky Edwards, Alanis Morissette as God, and actors Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in dual roles as themselves and two other familiar characters. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back co-stars numerous other recognizable performers in roles of various sizes, including Shannen Doherty, Jason Biggs, James Van Der Beek, Shannon Elizabeth, Tracy Morgan, Judd Nelson, Chris Rock, and George Carlin, among others. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

I'm sorry, but that was the worst out of all 5 of the Jersey movies by far. I loved all of Kevin's Smith's moveis, especially Chasing Amy and Dogma, but this was a disaster of a script.
It was fun to see all the characters back again for one final hoorah, but the middle of the script gets bogged down with some lame cross-country road trip adventures. I knew this movie was headed down hill when washed up old George Carlin shows up and tells the boys they must give head in order to hitchhike. Then an Orangutang is added to the character list? LAME! And when Will Smith showed up as some looser Federal Game Warden, I knew any redeeming value this movie had was over. THe one decent cameo is by Mark Hamil, and he gets his hand chopped off by a lightsabre again. So try this if you insist on seeing this flick: watch the first and last 20 minutes. Do yourself a favor and skip the lame middle.

| No doubt about it: Jay and Silent Bob were the best thing about Clerks, and there's a certain in-joke pleasure to be had when they pop up in films like Dogma. But Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is little more than the extended remix of what is essentially a 2-minute song. Kevin Smith fans will get to nudge-nudge at the appearance of several Smith alumni, and the film does have occasional funny moments. But all in all the film seems too concerned with proving that Smith can laugh at himself and not concerned enough with actually being funny. |
