The Spanish romantic comedy LOVE CAN SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH is pretty darn good, but you'd hardly know it from the wretched DVD transfer that you get here. This is one of the worst transfers I've seen (and of a movie filmed in some of the world's most beautiful locales!). Ana Belen and Penelope Cruz star as older/younger versions of the same character--a selfish, silly but highly enjoyable (and beautiful) woman, while Juanjo Puigcorbe and Gabino Diego handle the older/younger macho roles. Made in 1996, the movie spans 20 years, story-wise, and is funny, engaging and light on its feet (directed by veteran Manuel Gomez Pereira), but it does go on too long. If they had just managed to cut the last 20 minutes by half, viewers would end with a much bigger grin on their faces. As is, they'll still be smiling. Bonus: Look for Javier Bardem and Aitana Sanchez Gijon is small roles. (The movie itself gets a 7-8 rating, but the rotten transfer, with bad subtitling, deserves a two).
