call me a heathen, but i didn't get much from Cowboy. i think it only rates as gay/les drama or interest because they sling the word Fag around so much, and portray some of what it was to hustle gay men in the 60s in NY. kinda sad in that respect, really. the energy between the two main men is only barely homoerotic, and fairly one-sided.
i'll give hoffman props- his performance is excellent; voigt plays the texan rube pretty well, too, although almost too dumb to be believed.
vintage NY scenes as well that were somewhat interesting, especially since 42d st is now such a Disneyland. plus, there are some really psychadelic flashbacks and dream sequences. while these do help give the texan character some depth, overall, i just didn't care enough about the two of them.
