Live Monty Python. Can you really ask for more?

This set is just awesome. I've been a big Monty Python fan ever since I saw it on PBS when I was about 10. (Which would have been 19 years ago, btw.)

The first feature, Live at the Hollywood Bowl, is just great. Monty Python took their bizarre skits ont he road and refined them to perfection. The skits as originally aired on Flying Circus are great, but, honestly, they're even better here.

Like most Monty Python fanboys, I'm disappointed that Hollywood Bowl did not contain the Parrot Sketch. You can never get enough of the Parrot Sketch. (Even though, to be honest, I like Argument Clinic more and that IS included on here.)

Next, we have Monty Python doing an interview at a comedy festival. There's a notable appearance by Eddie Izzard who starts throwing out Python lines in an attempt to show them he's a fan. (This looks liek it was planned, btw.) "Strange women laying in ponds.."

Overall, this is excellent as well. You get a lot of insight into the Pythons and some great stories, as well as short clips of the original Flying Circus episodes. And it ends with a great rendition of Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.

Next up, there's a skit compilation called Parrot Sketch Not Included, which is hosted by Steve Martin. (Umm.. why? Is he a Python fan and I just don't know it?) This is just a long collection of Flying Circus skits and has the feel of the original TV series, though Terry Gilliam's cartoons are mainly absent from this. (And, really, it isn't the flying Circus without the cartoons.) This would serve as a really great introduction to people who think Monty Python only made a few movies. (Yes, I used to know someone who loved Holy Grail but had absolutely no idea there were other Python movies and a TV series.)

Finally, they have a special treat. One of the German episodes of Monty Python's Flying Circus. It's the original cast actually speaking German. They didn't dub it in or subtitle in German or anything. They actually wrote a script for a mostly new episode (a few bits had been recycled, like the Lumberjack Song.) and had it translated into German and then worked with a German voice coach to get pronounciation down correctly. I think episode is a great example of how dedicated Python was to their fans. They didn't half ass it, they actually learned to speak German to give the best possible performance for their German fans. I believe there were several German episodes made, but this is the only one on the disc. It feels just like an original Flying Circus episode, complete with cartoons and everything else you'd expect.

Overall, I strongly recommend this to anyone who likes Monty Python or wants an good introduction to them.
