PERFECT LOVE is not one of Catherine Breillat's more interesting films. In fact, it's surprisingly conventional, given what else she's come up with over the past 20-odd years. Detailing the relationship between a young man and older woman, the film begins with its ending, circling back to the high note of the affair's beginning then proceeding slowly (too slowly) down hill.

Breillat's ideas about the needs, desires and demands of men and women seem less noteworthy and more generic here than in some of her other work. The performances are quite good, as far as they are allowed to go. I take it that Breillat means her title ironically; if not, perfect love is clearly meant to be one that starts at the top and descends to death and destruction for both parties. As usual in this moviemaker's work, mothers come out badly.
