It's not easy being teenaged martial artist Ranma Saotome, but it's even worse when your martial-artist father Genma takes you from home at an early age to go on a decade-long training mission. He doesn't speak a word of Chinese, and yet he insists upon bringing you to the cursed training ground knows as Jusenkyo, where falling into one of his many springs there instantly turns you into whoever - or whatever - drowned there last. And then, the two of you have this little accident...From now on, a splash of cold water will turn your father into a giant panda, while you...well, you turn into a red-haired (and problematically well-built) female version of yourself. Hot water will reverse the effect, but only until the next time. What's a half-guy, half-girl to do?

Speed Racer may be The Godfather of all anime, but this is The Mother of all animes. A true gateway anime, this is the one that got me hooked on the genre. I didn't like anime until I saw this one. I thought they were all robots and tech-mech. And, if you can get past the premise, it will hook you too. Sure, there are other top animes, Onegai Teacher, Chobits, Read Or Die. . . But this one is in a class by itself. And it's not as heavy as some of the others. It has some touching moments, but just when you think it's getting too serious, it takes a sharp turn and makes you split your sides laughing. It Is The Ultimate Anime Classic Of All Time. |

| In the episodes on this DVD, Shampoo finally makes her appearance as yet another character chasing Ranma around. It's amazing how well Rumiko Takahashi grows her comedic ensemble without confusing us -- every character has his or her own personality with a different motive and relationship to Ranma, but each character has a strong reaction to boy-Ranma and to girl-Ranma that creates hilarious situations when Ranma changes between the two, intentionally or unintentionally. The chase sequence around the Anything Goes Dojo with Shampoo following Ranma while Ryoga and Nibiki taunt him/her with hot and cold water is fall-off-the-chair outrageous. And P-chan gets cooked! (of course not permanently, or else he wouldn't be a main character for the next umpteenth seasons) I highly recommend this series as a great situational comedy that mixes absurdity with fun action sequences and light romance. |

| The fun story arc in this DVD is the Anything Goes Gymnastics contest between Akane's high school team and the rival high school's team led by Kodachi '"The Black Rose". Think of this as WWF for rhythmic gymnastics, where the goal is to defeat the opponent using any tool available -- ribbons, balls, batons, hoops, pigs on chains. It's hilarious seeing the relationships developing among Akane, boy-Ranma, girl-Ranma, P-chan, and Ryoga as Akane trains to fight Kodachi. This series continues to be a great comedic soap opera with romance and lots of martial arts -- very silly but quite delightful. |
