Boogiepop Phantom is still confusing -- there are too many characters that I can't tell apart, and I'm bewildered about timelines, and I'm not sure what the heck those kids are doing, and what is real and what is psychotic delusion? But this series intrigues me. Those high school and middle school kids are not cookie-cutter cute nor archetypically pure. The play on time and memory in the storytelling creates an absorbing puzzle. The juxtaposition of grainy live-action with monochrome animation generates a restless style that fits well with the disturbing content.
And now, with the episodes on this disk, there are finally some explanations so that the disparate storylines are starting to bind together ... except that everything I've seen so far makes me wary about accepting those words at face value. I don't trust what the policeman says, especially after seeing what he is doing while he's explaining himself. I don't trust the connections that I think I found among the motorcycle chick, the hospital, and the daughter of the old woman who died. And I certainly don't trust that the little Pied Piper boy is completely explained with that Paisley Park episode.
Watch this series if you like psychological mysteries -- disquieting mysteries about human weakness. Be sure to start from the beginning. And just remember, the confusion is only a sweet tease that promises some explanation if you just stay with it, just a little longer... |
