Veteran black comedienne Jackie "Mobs" Mabley is featured in her first (and last) starring vehicle, Amazing Grace. Essentially playing herself, Mabley portrays a feisty ghetto dweller who champions the cause of ex-convict Moses Gunn. With the old lady's help, Gunn is elected mayor, then proceeds to clean up his corruption-ridden administration. | Unfortunately this look at Moms Mabley at the end of her career has none of the Moms' comedy that fans love. It is a poorly directed film with little humor. The cameo roles for great African-American actors are not well done and fail to "cap' their careers as would have been fitting. This film is only for the diehard historians of black filmmaking |
