Synopsis
A hired killer gives up his career for love in this stylish crime drama from Thailand. Kong (Pawalit Mongkolpisit) is a hit man who never speaks as he carries out his deadly assignments. Kong has begun to grow tired of his life of crime, and becomes infatuated with Fon (Premsinee Ratanasopha), a beautiful young woman who works as an assistant in a drugstore. As Kong tries to win the affections of Fon, he decides to turn against the gangsters who control him, and use his skills to earn his freedom. Bangkok Dangerous was directed by the brother team of Danny Pang and Oxide Pang; Oxide previously directed Who Is Running. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Great movie; horrible DVD by HK3MW January 11, 2004 - 5:48 PM PST

This review refers to the DVD, not the actual movie.

This is the only movie I have ever seen where the pan and scan process was done so poorly that I got a headache watching it. It appears as if the sides of the picture were simply chopped off, and there was no panning or scanning to compensate. This results in a picture that more often than not is merely a confused jumble that literally begs to be turned off.

I don't mean to complain about the full screen presentation just for the sake of complaining; there are certainly some movies for which the pan and scan process does not do as much damage (A Christmas Story springs to mind as an example).

I can't explain well in words what's wrong with the picture, but look for characters constantly being cut in half by the edge of the frame, characters' eyes at the edge of the frame looking out, and other problems that even a novice cinematographer (or anyone with even a basic understanding of image composition) should know to avoid. These are clearly not problems with the original picture, and obviously result from "formatting" the image for full-screen presentation.

I realize that substandard treatment is (woefully) the de facto standard for R1 releases of Hong Kong movies, but this film suffers more than most.

Avoid this DVD and spare yourself the pain.
