Synopsis
Two men who have made a career out of spinning remarkable stories find themselves bringing them to life in this inventive fantasy inspired by the creators of some of the world's best-loved fairy tales. Will Grimm (Matt Damon) and his brother Jake Grimm (Heath Ledger) earn their living by traveling from village to village and vanquishing strange supernatural beasts that have been menacing the populace. Or at least that's what their clients think has been happening; as it happens, Will and Jake are confidence men who cleverly stage the ghostly attacks and then take payment for making the creatures they fabricated go away. One day, the brothers arrive in a town and offer to help its people drive away evil spirits, unaware that the community is bordered by a genuine enchanted forest, and that young girls in the village have been disappearing at a frightful rate. The Grimm Brothers must now learn how to deal with real magic, with the help of the lovely but fearless Angelika (Lena Headey). Directed by Terry Gilliam, The Brothers Grimm also stars Monica Bellucci, Peter Stormare, and Jonathan Pryce. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Once upon a time Hollywood made good movies. That was then; this is now. Of all the films I've seen in the past year or so, this has to rate near or at the bottom of the heap. The very transparent CGI effects were laughable. But the dreadful script is what sets it apart. Stay far away from this one...

Although I agree with both of the previous reviews, I cant help but point out a couple of flaws in the film that water down the potency of its entertainment value. This movie could have been more tighter story and lengthwise had it been edited propertly. After the viewing, I felt a bit cheated by how long two specific antagonist occupied screen time. Jonathan Pryces character, the French commander "Delatombe" and an Italian lackey named "Cavaldi". Given, they add an extra layer of complexity to the storytelling, their presence would have been felt more had their exposure been limited and not stretched for the sake of adding "tension" to the running time of the movie. Coming in two minutes short of two hours, youll know what I mean. This could have been an hour and a half of very good entertainment, instead, were given a diluted version that ran longer than it should have.

Furthermore, as a direct effect of the wasted time, there was a lot of cramming done to explain the origins of the Grimms fairytales. A lot of it was obvious, but there were some that seemed made up just to satisfy the plot. In any event, if you dont mind any of these critiques, then you should be thoroughly entertained for two hours.

I thought this movie was well written and well acted. It wasn't the high art we all hope for, but an very enjoyable "stay home with a pizza movie". It was very similar in sensibility as well as looks (cinematography) to Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow. A good family movie if you kids are about 9 or older.
