Vietnam and America

An unusually "intimate epic," THE BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY tells the story of Vietnam and America, 20 years later. You ought to watch this lovely film--which takes place in Vietnam, Malaysia, New York City and Texas--for no other reason than, in this politically divisive time, it wipes away all thoughts of blue states versus red states, treating America as a unified whole. The story it tells is probably typical in its generalities, less so as it offers up more specifics about a U.S. soldier, his Vietnamese wife and the offspring of the two. It may also open your eyes as to how that offspring is treated in Vietnam.

The lead actor Damien Nguyen may be an unknown here in the U.S. but he registers strongly via his physical beauty and elegant reticence. The known quantities are Nick Nolte, Tim Roth, Temura Morrison and Bai Ling, all of whom are in fine form. The cinematography is stunning, particularly the Vietnam sequences, and the director has the skill and sense to allows the movie--cliches and all--to unfold in its own time, quietly and movingly.
